What is SecondLife?

Many commonly prescribed medications carry a significant risk of side effects, a fact that is often taken for granted. However, less commonly recognised is the potential for these side effects to persist long after the drug has been fully metabolised and cleared from the body.

Certain medications pose a higher risk of causing lasting or even permanent side effects, particularly those associated with conditions informally known as Post-Accutane Syndrome (PAS), Post-SSRI Syndrome, and Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS).

This website uses translational research methods not only to provide a solid scientific foundation for understanding these conditions, but to explore possible alternatives and even strategies for remediation.

Watch My Breakdown of the Science of Post-SSRI Syndrome

In this video I attempt to explain the science underlying the mechanism of action of SSRIs and in particular, the 5-HT1A receptor. Recent research highlights the pivotal role of the 5-HT1A receptor, not only in the therapeutic effects of many psychiatric medications – but also in their side effects. This receptor has a critical regulatory influence on a range of functions, including cognition, libido, mood, and even hormonal balance.

However, the 5-HT1A receptor’s mechanisms are complex, making a simple explanation particularly challenging. Nevertheless, my goal here is to present the latest scientific findings in a clear, accessible way – even for people with a limited biology backgrounds.

In this video, I’ll explain how SSRIs interact with this serotonin receptor to bring about lasting changes in cognition, libido and mood.
