What is SecondLife?
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the fastest growing across the west, with U.S. spending alone increasing by 13.6% between 2022 and 2023. [1] It’s now estimated that 66% of American adults are using some form of prescription medication. [2] For many individuals, these medications function as intended, with minimal complications. However, for others, treatment can involve significant side effects that can even persist beyond discontinuation – dubbed ‘Post-Medication Syndromes’.
While it may seem straightforward to resolve side effects by discontinuing the offending medication, the reality is often more complex. In fact, some medications appear to cause lasting or even permanent changes to physical and mental health. Patients falling into this category may complain of side effects even years after the drug has fully metabolised out of the body. [3] Adding to their dismay is the apparent inability of doctors to explain how medication that’s no longer present in the body can still have such profound effects.
It’s only in recent years with a better understanding of biology, and in particular epigenetics, that plausible explanations for these conditions are now available. SecondLife aims to apply methods of translational research to provide a scientific basis for understanding enduring adverse reactions to common medications including SSRIs, Finasteride, and Accutane. Additionally I aim to present the science in a way that it accessible to people with even a cursory knowledge of biology.
In particular, this site is focused on the science surrounding Retinoids (such as Accutane), 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (such as Finasteride) and antidepressants (such as SSRIs). If you would like to support this website, you can become a member or offer one time donations.
